| So today, I worked on a press-release sheet for class, had to write a bio about myself. Really interesting bragging yourself up, I feel guilty. But I'm getting used to it, lol. Then we went to a party at my prof Warren's house, where we listened to a radio broadcast from MVY radio - a local station on the island that is like the #5 online station/show/broadcast in the nation. A couple of us were featured on it - including me!!! So "Beautiful Anesthesia" has now been broadcast coast to coast, hopefully with much fanfare and admiration to follow. Speaking of which, just got my music myspace up - www.myspace.com/joshbealemusic. So check it out, add me, all that jazz. Got to spend some time chatting tonight with someone I haven't gotten to talk to in ages who I've really missed. Always feels good. Finishing up some stuff for class, then heading to bed. | | |
| So, it really has been awhile since I've written. But to catch you all up... I spent about 5 days last week in NYC (woohoo) meeting with Execs and marketing reps at Sony, BMI, RCA records, Atlantic, the Grammy's, etc. to talk about the music biz, international marketing, copyright law, all that jazz. Felt very comfortable in a "big biz" setting, vs. the indie market, so at least I'm learning my niche. Also heard from some Grammy winning songwriters about their experiences, Indie reps, etc. It was fun, too, to just see the city from a different point of view from what I had when I was in 7th grade, the last time I was here. It's not so big anymore, less like a dream, more like a city. Just good to hang with friends, kind of reign free. Spent Turkey day holiday in Plymouth with my fam - not an incredibly exciting trip, but still good to relax and see everyone. Now I'm back in MV, with a few wild days of practice and promoting between me and two shows, one on campus (Thursday), and another on Friday at Outerland (again, Carly Simon's club), but this time being one of the headlining acts, doing a 45 minute set (freak out time! How the crap am I supposed to fill this? I'm not ready!!!) And Tom, my bassist/prof/mentor, said he'd only play bass for me if I'd start giving him lead sheets that weren't "shit". Yeah. So I've had to re-transcribe a few sheets, cause he's picky. Oh well, experience. Got a care package from someone at JBU this morning, had a chapel dvd in which I saw a bunch of familiar faces - made me smile, and get just the teensiest bit homesick. But I still don't want to leave, haha. And for everyone who wants to hear the stuff I'm working on, I'm really sorry for the delay - I'll have a music myspace up soon, just finalizing some photoshoot touchups, and wanting to make sure I'm not putting up half-ass work online as a representation of who I am. I'm a perfectionist, what can I say. Peace. | | |
| So, the day has finally arrived. In a few short hours (ok, 6 1/2 - I'm anxious), I'll be playing at Outerland, Carly Simon's club on the island. There's this big rock n' beer fest called "Rocktoberfest", and the band I'm in will be the last of the opening acts (kind of funny that a hardcore band will play right before a reggae act - ah well). So yeah I'm just getting pumped. | | |
| Well, I have a few hours off right now - I'm MC-ing a concert tonight, which should be interesting. Gotta make sure I can remember all the info on the 7 bands that are playing (or at least where they'll be written on my arm, haha). We had a lecture this morning, which ended up being mostly about the problems with the pre-fix "Christian" on so many things ("Christian Music", "Christian Colleges", "Christian Coffee House", "Christian Motorcycle Clubs", etc.) and how screwed up it all is. I was really thrown back to find out that a recent poll shows that over 60% of America thinks that a Christian is "someone who hates homosexuals". Which reminded me of a little incident at JBU, if you know what I mean. But seriously, its ridiculous that we're sending that kind of message to the world, about who Jesus is especially. So imagine, when you know all that, and you add the prefix "Christian" in front of something you're doing, what kind of a message you're sending. Something else interesting I found out - my professor, who taught the boys from Jars of Clay for a few years, said that when they did their first headlining tour, Jars did about 280 shows in a year, all in the club scene at around $300 a night (average pay for a club show). The thing most people don't realize, is that Jars was offered 10s of thousands of dollars consistently to come and play at churches, youth groups, etc. And they turned them all down. Why? So that they wouldn't pigeon-hole themselves into a "Christian" box, and diminish their credibility and ministry to the rest of the world. In the words of my prof, Warren, if you want to minister and speak to an audience of youth groups and churches and help that crowd, go for it - there are some great, well-meaning people in that business. But if you want to be able to speak to the fans of, say, the Foo Fighers, and you're flying a "Christian" banner, they won't let you in the doors of the club. That's just the way it is. Naming something "Christian" is not a neutral choice. Become all things to all people. I'm basically incredibly pissed off at mainstream Christianity and the Church right now. | | |
| My music biz prof just turned me on to an artist who is now immediately one of my favourites - Joseph Arthur. | | |
